Sokone is a town located in the Fatick region (240 kms south-west of Dakar, in the district of Foundiougne). On the "Transgambienne" road, between the city of Kaolack and the village of Karang.
Sokone area is watered by the river Sine, which find in his stream the salt water from the Atlantic Ocean.

 

The region offers a lagoon landscape of mangroves. The Sine Saloum is an area characterized by an intense flora and a particular fauna.

 

 

Sokone is populated by 25.000 inhabitants, from various origins. Mainly by the following populations : Serere, Wolof, Socés, Diola, Toucouleurs and other ethnic groups. A majority is muslim, but living in harmony with christians. These people are devoted in activities such as : agriculture, agro-forestry, fisheries, livestock (sheep, pigs, goats), crafts, trade and eco-tourism. The city hosts the regional headquarters of initiative union for tourism promotion.

 

The town of Sokone has a modern hospital, a police station, a secondary school and public infrastructures. Many women's groups are involved in the processing of cereals, seafood and fruits.The hostel supports, recommends these various actors and connects them with the development partners.
